About Sauna Heaters

If there was ever a 'heart' of a traditional sauna, then the sauna heater is as good as one as any. In history, the original heaters were just a pile of stones stacked around and on top of a fire, which made it very slow to heat and quick to cool down due to the constant heat fluctuations. Smoke saunas did not even have a chimney and the smoke had to be cleared from the room only just before bathing, the problem being that heat escaped with the smoke. Since one could not keep a fire burning during bathing, a lot of stones were required to maintain the heat. Sauna fireplaces had to usually be huge piles of stone, more than a meter across and almost as high to sufficiently heat a sauna room.
The addition of a chimney made it possible to keep a fire during the sauna and hence reduce the amount of stones necessary. The second great innovation to sauna heaters was electricity, changing sauna habits entirely. Now saunas could be heated faster, easier, and for longer periods of time, delivering consistent heat.  Sauna heaters have since evolved into a variety of alternatives fit for different needs and wants. After a lot of experimentation and adjustments, many sauna builders are now returning to the use of older methods of heating, even smoke saunas. The heaters, be it electric, gas, or traditional wood burning, have great attributes such as quick heat up times, cutoff switches for safety, cooler outside surfaces and wide dispersal of various levels of heat.
